An Introduction to Aromatherapy Oils
There are a wide variety of aromatherapy oils on the market today. You can purchase them at health food stores, whole foods markets and of course online. The premise behind aromatherapy is that certain scents can trigger reactions in the brain. This alternative healing practice has been used for relaxation, stress relief, invigoration, libido and more. A word of caution – essential oils are not for direct application to the skin because they are very strong. Dilution in a carrier oil is necessary if you want to use aromatherapy in a massage oil or bath oil.
You can use essential oils in the bath, or a few drops in unscented oil or lotion for bodily application. Also, they can be diffused into the air through a variety of methods including oil burners and light bulb rings. You can also waft the bottle of essential oil under your nose or put a few drops on a tissue and inhale. The scent will last a long time on the tissue, just by using a few drops. As you can see, the application of aromatherapy can be done in a variety of ways.
Choosing fragrance oils can be a lot of fun, especially if you enjoy the world of scent. If you have specific complaints for which you want to use this alternative therapy do some research on which oils are best. For example, the scent of green apple was studied and shown to relieve headaches in some individuals. Lemon and other citrus scents are associated with mood elevation, while lavender is associated with stress relief. Once you are well versed in aromatherapy principles you can blend your own scents using a carrier oil or perfume base.
There are many sites and books that can help you study the art of aromatherapy oils. A couple of titles to consider include The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood and Aromatherapy: An A-Z: The Most Comprehensive Guide to Aromatherapy Ever Published by Patricia Davis. These are just a few titles on the market on the subject of aromatherapy. You can find essential oils by renowned brands like Aura Cacia, a name you'll see in many stores. This company makes essential oils, bath products, fragrance sprays and more. Online there are a variety of kits and sets for anyone who wants to experiment with a variety of oils.
